CSX E-Business Rolls Out Smartphone App
CSX Offers New Convenience to Customers with iPhone Application

CSX E-Business released a new iPhone application, ShipCSX. The application allows CSX customers to track freight shipments and trains across the CSX network. It also provides customers with specifications of rail cars such as equipment dimensions and weights. The app is a highly anticipated addition to CSX's e-commerce tools, and bolsters the company's commitment to provide reliable service to customers.

"The ShipCSX application makes planning and tracing shipments easier than ever, enabling customers to better plan for the arrival of scheduled shipments" said Eddie Chesser, director e-business CSX. "Designed with our supply chain and logistics-conscious consumers in mind, this application continues our commitment to make rail the most cost-effective and environmentally-friendly way to move freight".

The ShipCSX app provides CSX customers anywhere/anytime access to updates on the status of their rail shipments via a simple smartphone interface. Customers can retrieve up-to-date information about their shipments, including estimated times of arrivals and movement history. The ShipCSX app will allow customers to better plan operations surrounding the arrival and use of the goods shipped via CSX rail lines.

The application is available for free through the iTunes store, and currently works on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices, and more options are soon to come. "CSX is working to add more functionality to the app, as well as an Android-compatible version", said Steve Watkins, director of technology applications, CSX.

Empty Residue Reporting
In 2009, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a ruling that amended a long standing practice of allowing empty shipments containing residue to enter the United States requiring no manifesting or reporting of these empties to CBP.

The amended ruling now requires all empty shipments containing residue returning to the United States to be manifested by the border crossing carrier and reported to CBP.

Residue as defined by CBP is any product or material left in the rail conveyance after the unloading process.

CBP has provided a FAQ regarding this ruling and can be found with the following link:

Find Frequently Asked Questions Document

This FAQ is currently a working document and subject to revision. Please refer to this document from time to time to take advantage of newly revised material.

How does this new ruling impact the rail industry?
CBP has established a threshold for residue of 7% or less of the rail car capacity. This will determine how CBP will handle the manifest reporting once received.
  • If the residue is less that 7% these rail shipments will not require broker entry and CSX upon manifest reporting to CBP will obtain an automated section 321 release.
  • If the residue weight is in excess of 7% of the car capacity then the manifest reported to CBP will require a broker and the broker will be required to make entry to facilitate release of the car into the United States.

Currently CBP is looking for informed compliance for residue reporting for rail carriers to begin in early 2012.

CSX is currently developing system enhancements to facilitate the capture/retention and handling of residue information. CSX will be working closely with our customers on any changes required to provide residue information on the release or billing of any affected rail cars. CSX will continue to monitor additional guidance or policy from CBP as it becomes available.
CLMs, 322s, and Waybill Verification
As a CSX customer you are able to retrieve shipment status events and review your waybills at www.ShipCSX.com. Also, many customers automatically receive shipment status events via EDI 322s and car location messages (CLMs), as well as, receive waybill verifications (417) directly from CSX. By receiving data directly from CSX or by using ShipCSX, customers do not incur cost associated with using 3rd parties to receive or exchange data. Additionally, CSX's B2B Integration Services can convert standard EDI and CLM formatted messages into any data format to meet your system needs. You no longer need an intermediary to convert data to/from your preferred format. If you would like to explore how exchanging data directly with CSX can save your company money, please contact our eBusiness hotline at 877-SHIPCSX and select option 2 or email us at [email protected].
Has your Company Name Changed?
In order to affect a name change, the customer's representative having sufficient authority must provide documentation from the company requesting the change on company letterhead showing if possible the information below. We will accept documentation sent out to their vendors.
  • A copy of the notification sent out to their vendors
  • The former legal entity and/or multiple names used on bills of lading
  • The complete new legal entity
  • Did the Tax ID change or remain the same
  • The reason for the name change
  • The effective date of the name change

  • We recommend that the customer go online and fill out a credit application in the new customer name (make reference to the former customer name in the comments field). Also, make sure that the credit application customer name is the one that is going to be used on the bills of ladings and not the parent name so as not to cause any further confusion.
