New Tool, SCRS, Coming Soon to Aid Shippers
In August, CSX will roll out an important data repository through ShipCSX. The repository, officially called Rail Industry Serving Carrier Reciprocal Switch File Customer Look-up, is more commonly called SCRS.

SCRS is an excellent reference resource for shipping customers to specify a receiver and learn the carrier responsible for the delivery of goods. It also aids in identifying a receiver's accessibility; whether one or more railroads has access is a critical factor when evaluating price and service.

CSX's eBusiness team will host a demonstration of SCRS during its September workshop in Atlanta.
Reminder for Hazardous Material Shippers
It is extremely important to provide proper shipping instructions, especially when tendering Hazardous Materials for shipment. You must provide a bill of lading that contains all required hazardous material shipping information and select the 49 series Hazardous Materials Response Code (HMRC) that corresponds to your shipping information.

Subpart C (Parts 172.200 through 172.205) of the U. S. Department of Transportation's Hazardous Material Regulations, 49 CFR, requires each person who offers a hazardous material for transportation shall describe the hazardous material on the shipping paper in the manner required by the regulations. This 49 STCC number must be entered in the STCC field to generate a shipping document that displays the complete hazardous material shipping description as required by the U.S. DOT.

EDI 404/858 users should provide the 49 STCC number in the L5 segment and the corresponding full hazardous description in the LH1 Loop.

CSX's B2B Team Wins Innovation Award
A four-year collaboration brings improved data transmission and earns an innovation award for team members.

CSX'S B2B team, an eight-member team composed of members of eBusiness and CSX Technology, took home one of Sterling Commerce's Innovation Awards in April. Sterling Commerce is a supplier of technical applications designed to integrate business collaboration networks. Each year, they give awards to companies that "have demonstrated innovative ways to optimize and transform collaborative business processes to better serve their customers, reduce costs and protect their reputations."

"We used the Sterling Integrator to take CSX off VANs value-added networks," said Ralph Ibera, technical director, CSX Technology, and member of the team. "VANs served as a sort of middle-man to convey secure data between us and customers, vendors, regulators, or other railroads. As third parties, VANs limited speedy data transfer and charged fees at each step."

The team successfully used the Sterling Integrator to remove the need for VANs, while building a new, more secure communications channel between CSX and partners with whom it shares data.

"The benefits to the new integration are faster transfer of data, lower costs from elimination of fees, additional layers of security around our data, and elimination of paper in data transfer," said Todd Wilson, manager-eBusiness, also a member of the team.

CSX's award category was Seamless and Secure B2B Integration. The award cites CSX as follows: "CSX Technology . . . sought to create an agile supply chain by incorporating more electronic communications, supporting more formats and accommodating customized data to integrate with its legacy systems. As a result of the implementation, CSX can now set up new customers in under 10 minutes and reduced VAN transaction costs by more than $2.7 million over four years."
